Even before the start of the tournament, Johan was sure of the 2013 club title because of a large lead in the CP ranking. Merci, Marc, pour la très jolie "cup" que tu as faite! In the final, however, Zsolt proved too strong, coming back from 1-4 to 7-5, both players finishing the double match point game in extreme time pressure.

Inspired by compassion, unselfishness, and other Christmas-type feelings, Toon generously offered fine chocolats for the 5 finalists! 1st prize: 1000 g (Zsolt); 2nd (Johan) and 3th (Alain) prizes: 500 g; 4th (Michel) and 5th (Toon) prizes: 250 g.

In addition, out of pure selfishness (sic), Henri offered two bottles of Bio Champagne, the first one for the player that was eliminated first (Liliane), and the second one for the 7th place, i.e., the first losing semi-finalist of the last chance (Steven).

Finally, there was one bottle of Veuve Clicquot to be won. (Left-over from Johan and Toon's birthday party.) Geert's two checkers danced with 66 against Johan's one-point board, earning Geert a bottle of "Champagne!"

We played in the new University and Snooker, Heverlee. Although we started early (19:15) and we played with clocks at limited time (Bronstein, 12'12" for a 7-pointer, 9'12" for a 5-pointer and 6'12" for a 3-pointer), we did not finish in time (closing time at midnight), so we had to cut the tournament short, leaving the last matches in the consolation and the last chance unplayed.

Leading 2-0, Geert needed only to win a single set to 11 points in order to beat Guy Van Middelem and grab the title. The match was played on Friday evening, December 20, in front of a live audience in Café Sport in Leuven. Leading with 67 points, Johan is almost sure of the 2013 club title, unless Geert or Toon manage to mobilize a troop of players to jack up the stakes high enough at the final round on December 27. It really was Johan's lucky evening, who scored not less than two backgammons, both fully efficient, in four 5-point matches.

At the occasion of their anniversaries, Johan and Toon offered five bottles of Veuve Clicquot. Dancing with a double 6 on a one-point board and shouting "Champagne!" was sufficient to get one. Two players were (un)lucky enough to win a bottle. The remaining three bottles will be given away in the same fashion at the Christmas tournament on December 27. Nadia had prepared a delicious chocolate cake, which the friendly staff of Sport and Squash Club "De Vaart" kindly allowed us to enjoy in their trendy bar.

With only 2 tournaments to go, Johan, at 166 CP, is already fantasizing about the club title. Zsolt (132 CP), Geert (125 CP) and Toon (122 CP) will be needing a tournament victory in November or December to turn the tables.

We're starting to feel at home in Sport and Squash Club "De Vaart". Thank you, Wouter, for staying up so late and allowing us to finish our chouette game and empty our glasses of Duvel and excellent white wine!

Johan's shots were killing and his checkers invulnerable. Let's hope he continues his lucky streak at the 4 Cubes encounter against Gent on October 4.

The other contenders for the club title faced an uphill battle. But with still three tournaments to go in 2013, nothing is decided yet.

As in August, we played in Sport and Squash Club "De Vaart". Players wishing to relax could enjoy watching some high-level squash games in a tournament taking place that evening.

Congratulations to Henri, beating Johan, Alain, Guy, and Toon, for a well-deserved tournament victory. By winning the last chance, Geert confirms his first place: his ambitions are clear! Although Guy has not won a tournament yet, he still enters the top-5 thanks to his consistent performance, acquiring CP every tournament. And let's not forget Toon, making a comeback, or Johan, who seemed to have had a quiet summer.

A warm welcome to new player Chris Stone!

After the closure of the University Snooker and Pool, we played in a new venue, Sport and Squash Club "De Vaart", Kolonel Begaultlaan 15, 3012 Wilsele (second floor). In the spatious and nicely furnished bar, we could comfortably play until well over 1 AM, enjoying a variety of fresh beers and good food. In the next weeks, we will try out some other venues as well.

After the closure of the University Snooker and Pool (Heverlee), where our club has been playing since 2006, we are going on tour to explore a number of new venues. The Fourth Friday of August 23 will take place in the bar of the Sport and SquashClub "De Vaart", Kolonel Begaultlaan 15, 3012 Wilsele (second floor). You can park your car in the street. Keep an eye on this website for our venue for the next few Fridays.

We are grateful to Christina and Liévin of the University Snooker and Pool for their hospitality during eight years, during our club evenings on Friday and at the yearly Leuven Open. It's been really great, thank you!

Congratulations to Geert for this second victory in a row! Geert firmly takes the lead in the CP ranking. Thanks to his Last Chance victory, Zsolt joins the top-5.

A warm welcome to new player Philippe Braekman!

With his first tournament victory this year, Geert joins the top five in the CP ranking and crosses the 1500 border in the Bigelo ranking list. Congratulations! Runner-up Johan takes the lead in the CP ranking. The 2013 club competition is now half way, with six out of twelve tournaments being played, each having a different winner. Everything is still open!

After a two-month absence, Zsolt came back in style, beating Leuven's top-ranked player Toon in the final. It was a short match, two games only. In both games, Toon doubled and Zsolt accepted, turning the tables around, in the second game even by winning a gammon. Congratulations!

Having been sent to the early rounds of the consolation by Zsolt, Luc fought his way up, winning four 3-pointers in a row. He earned sufficiently many championship points to take the lead, together with Toon, in the CP-ranking.

In the last chance, Guy defeated Niyazi and Patrick to snatch away the final prize points.

In the CP-ranking, there are now 5 players on top, only 12 points apart. The field is open!

Trailing 0-4 in the final to Steven, Johan fought back to 4-4. When the double match point game culminated in a race, Johan received a series of large doubles, making up for a large race deficit, just before the finish line. As a consequence, Johan sticks out his head in the championship ranking, 4 points behind Steven, occupying the first place.

New friends Armen and Peter tasted from live tournament play for the first time. More experienced players gently explained them how to play with the cube, even pointing out the mandatory double in the post-Crafword game during the actual matches.

In addition, two BIC matches were started: Paulus van Rooijen versus Akbar Soltani (2-0) and Patrick De Wilde versus Zsolt Tasnadi (1-0). Paulus had brought a Brazilion/Portugese friend, Pedro, whom he had met at the Nordic Open in Copenhagen.

We were happy to have four ladies in the tournament and to see Nabil and Daniel again.

To allow for somewhat longer matches, we played a main/conso/last-chance tournament with matches to 7/5/3 points, even if that meant that we could not complete the tournament.

With three clean victories, Steven captured the first place of the tournament. No changes at the top-3 of the ranking.

We were happy to welcome Kris Boyen, who brought a present for the club, the antique backgammon board of the Amedee, the pub were the club was founded. Thirty years after its opening, the Amedee closed its doors on March 16.

With Luc having just three checkers left to bear off, all of them on his deuce point, Alain could not move his lone checker on Luc's ace point when he rolled double ones. Luc then rolled high doubles, winning a doubled backgammon, the only game in the very short final. For the second time in a row, Alain finished the tournament as runner-up.

A fine achievement for Joeri, kicked out by Johan in main to win four consecutive matches in the consolation. Joeri won the consolation final from Patrick, who was eliminated from the main by Johan, but had his revenge in the consolation, sending Johan to the last chance.

Liévin had the honour of beating Miss Soltani (Fakhri Salasi) twice, in the main as well as in the last chance. The last chance was a succession of four victories for Zsolt, fighting his way up to earn the last bit of championship points to be divided.

Nobody could stop Toon, beating Patrick, Geert VdS, and Alain Chif.

New friends Irfan and Nyazi enjoyed themselves and obtained nice results, securing some championship points. Niyazi managed to beat Johan twice, the second time in the final of the consolation, after a failed coup classique by Johan.

Compared to last year, the tournament format has remained largely unchanged, with two exceptions: First, time control is now Bronstein with 12 minutes and 30 seconds bank time for 5-pointers and 7 minutes 30 seconds for 3-pointers (plus 12 seconds per move, as usual). Second, if there are more than 16 players, the tournament format will be elimination Swiss. See the Club Championship rules for more details.
