Backgammon Club Leuven

Twelve players from many different clubs, Bruges, Hasselt, Gent, Brussels and of course Leuven participated in the last tournament of the Backgammon Championship Leuven 2011. We played a Main, Consolation and Last chance format.

The candidate winners of this Championship were Patrick, who had 184 pts before the start, Toon with 174 pts and Johan with 151 pts. The number of points in case of victory for this last tournament was 48 pts (12 players X 4). Therefore all matches with these players were important.

In the first round of the Main Toon lost against Michel, Patrick lost also against Geert and Johan was bye. For Patrick and Toon it was a status quo. At that stage Johan was still in the race and could with a potential victory earn 48 points, but in the second round Johan lost against Dan. In the Consolation Patrick won against Luc, and Toon won against Johan. With their victories, Patrick and Toon were the only ones who could pretend to be the final winner.

In the third round Patrick won against Henri and Toon lost against Geert. So Patrick took a little advantage over Toon. Patrick played the semi-final against Marc and if Patrick won this match, he was sure to be the final winner. Very early in the match Marc accepted a double proposed by Patrick. The double was an obvious take, but with a double 3, Patrick could easily close his board. After the first two rolls, Marc was already with 2 checkers on the bar and lost the match with a gammon. Patrick remarked that Marc played one of his few perfect matches ever, no mistake, no blunder, of course Marc stayed on the bar nearly all the match ;o).

With this victory, Patrick was sure to be the final winner of the Championship. He played against Guy the final of the Consolation. Finally Guy won the Consolation final.

In the meantime, in the main round, Michel and Dan were the 2 finalists. For the second time in only four participations this year, Michel won the final. Congratulations Michel!!

In the Last chance Johan won the final against Marc.

We concluded the tournament with the prize ceremony. Patrick was declared the final winner and received the first trophy of the best Backgammon player of the Championship Leuven 2011. Congratulations Patrick!!!

I personally thank all the 26 participants who participated in the course of 2011. I want also to thank the persons who gave me the opportunity to organize this first Championship Leuven. I also wish all the best for the future Director of the 2012 edition.

De Cyprus Open was weer een prachtig tornooi dat ook steeds blijft groeien, dit jaar waren er in totaal 106 deelnemers (waarvan 60 turken) uit 21 landen.

Eerst enkele resultaten van de tornooien alvorens aan de masters te beginnen:

• In de Beginners waren er 8 spelers, het tornooi werd gewonnen door Nuray Ozgun (turkije), runner-up was Pooya Haghani (iran).
• Intermediate met 34 deelnemers: winner werd Volkan Er (turkije), runner-up was Ozge Apak (turkije) 3/4 waren Metin Erikler (turkije) en Cem Ozdes (turkije), last chance: winner Cengiz Dindar (turkije) runner-up Necati Doganaslan (turkije).
• De super jackpot werd gewonnen door Akiko Yazawa (japan), runner-up was Peter Blachian (duitsland).
• De doubles consulting met 32 teams, hierin teamde ik samen met Engin Ongel, in de eerste ronde echter verloren we tegen het japanse team Naoya Kihara/Akiko Yazawa. De finale werd na een spannende comeback gewonnen door het turkse team Ufuk Aksak en Erhan Yenisen, de runner-up was Konrad Froschl (oostenrijk/zweden) en Tobias Hellwag (duitsland), 3/4 werden Naoya Kihara en Akiko Yazawa (japan) en Timur Azizov en Sergey Erokhin (rusland).
• De Masters tenslotte met 64 deelnemers waaronder mezelf:

Op de eerste dag was mijn eerste partij tegen Vincenzo Riceputi (italie), ik had in Portugal al tegen hem gewonnen en ook nu kwam ik na een 3-0 achterstand terug naar een 9-4 voorsprong om tenslotte met 13-8 te winnen.

In de tweede ronde kreeg ik de ijzersterke Bob Wachtel (USA) tegen en besloot ik ook wat meer risico te nemen met vroege cubes, na een 2-0 achterstand won ik 2 gecubete games met gammon (8-2) waarna Bob terug kwam tot 9-6, in het volgende game gaf ik weer een aggressieve cube die hij nam, en na een slechte roll van mij kreeg ik de cube terug naar 4, aangezien ik geen gammons kon verliezen en Bob met 2 checkers op mijn 1-punt stond tegen een 2,4,5,6,8 bord en zelf slechts een 5,6,8,10,13 bord had waardoor hij wel veel mogelijke hits had maar ik zeker nog kansen had nam ik de 4-cube ook aan, Bob had de pech van geen hit te rollen en ik kon ontsnappen om met een overbodige gammon te winnen 13-6.

De eerste match op de tweede dag in de derde ronde was tegen Naoya Kihara (japan), na in het dubbelspel tegen hem verslagen te zijn had ik nu de kans op een revanche.In het eerste game met cube op 2 en goede kans om gammon te winnen nog enkel het 5-punt clearen maar een 51 roll liet een enkel shot met een 1 hetgeen hij ook wierp om vervolgens het eerste game te winnen, de volgende games werd het 0-3 ; 1-3 ; 1-4 ; 3-4, een sterke cube van mij in het volgende game resulteerde in een take en gammon 7-4, waarna het 9-4 ; 9-5 ; 11-5 ; en 12-5 werd, het crawfordgame verloor ik 12-6 het volgende game moest ik helaas weer een shot laten tijdens de bear-off 12-8 waarna ik tenslotte er toch in slaagde om de partij te winnen 13-8.

De volgende match (kwartfinale) was tegen Alex Ars (rusland) , hier won ik het eerste game gemakkelijk 1-0 maar daarna was ondanks mijn sterk spel het geluk geheel aan de rus zijn kant, hij miste geen enkel shot meer in de rest van de partij met als resultaat dat de score 1-1 ; 1-3 ; 1-5 ; 1-6 ; 1-7 ; 1-8 werd, dan kon ik met de cube nog een game winnen waarin hij nog net de gammon wist te redden 3-8, in het volgende game met cube heb ik een 5 puntsbord tegen een 2 punts bord (enkel 4-punt is open) met de rus met 3 checkers op de bar, hij slaagt er echter in om 4 keer op rij een 4 te werpen waarna ik ook iedere keer op zijn 4-punt moet opkomen en op mijn eigen 4-punt kan slaan, bij de vijfde worp gooit hij dan nog een 44 en sta ik plots van gammonwinst op gammonverlies 3-12, waarna hij de partij wint met 3-13.

In de fighters bracket kom ik uit tegen Dimitrios Mangalas (griekenland), de partij ging in het begin gelijk op 0-2 ; 1-2 ; 3-2 ; 3-3 waarna hij licht uitliep naar 3-5 ; 3-6; 4-6, in het volgende game geeft hij een vroege cube die ik moet nemen gevolgd door een 44 van hem (hit en close 5punt) ik blijf op de bar waarna een 44, 66 en 55 voldoende waren om een gammon te winnen 4-9

De play-offs (het systeem is dat de 2 finalisten van de main en de 2 finalisten van de fighters bracket alle 4 in de geldprijzen zitten en dan een play-off spelen onder elkaar) werden bereikt door de Tobias Hellwag (duitsland) en Aykut Uzel (turkije) in de main en Dimitrio Mangalas (griekenland) en Vincenzo Riceputi (italie) in de fighters bracket.

Op de laatste dag werden de play-offs gespeeld en de last chance.

In de last chance (60 spelers) begon ik tegen Jan Jacobowitz (duitsland), hier had ik in portugal tegen verloren dus was het tijd voor een revanche, ik won dan ook met 5-0, de tweede ronde was tegen Allattin Ouzabtin (turkije), een zeer spannende match die 9 games duurde en waar ik met 9 seconden resterend met 5-4 tegen won, vervolgens kwam ik uit tegen Mario Sequeira (portugal)wat resulteerde in een 5-2 overwinning, de kwartfinale speelde ik tegen Konrad Froschl (oostenrijk/zweden) en won ik met 5-1, vervolgens kwam ik in de halve finale uit tegen Talat Papatya (turkije), deze had de eerste 2 games volop dubbels wat resulteerde in een 0-4 achterstand, in het crawfordgame eindigt het met 1 checker op mijn 1-punt tegen 3 checkers voor de turk maar een 66 roll maakte een eind aan mijn reeks met een 0-5 verlies.

De play-offs werden tenslotte gewonnen door Tobias Hellwag (duitsland) die hiermee een back-to back overwinning behaalt na in april het tornooi ook gewonnen te hebben, runner-up werd Aykut Uzel (turkije, 3/4 werden Vincenzo Riceputi (italie) en Dimitrios Manganas (griekenland), de Last chance werd gewonnen door Zafer Tas (turkije), runner-up was Talat Papatya (turkije).

De Grand Finale die in de volgende 3 dagen gespeeld werd, had als winnaar Mario Sequeira (portugal), 2de werd Jurgen Orlowski (duitsland) en 3de Konstantinos Mitrelis (griekenland).

What a suspense! Patrick managed to regain the lead. Eight contestants were present, so we could start the tournament with a Main, Consolation and Last chance format.

In the first round of the Main, Patrick already beat Johan, a direct rival for the final victory. At the same time Toon, the leader at the start of this tournament, lost against Dan Pascu. Patrick, like the others, was very determined to reach the finals - which he did. His final game was against Dan Pascu. Dan Pascu, who had not been coming to the tournaments since April, managed to win the final. Congratulations! Patrick's second place, however, proved sufficient to shoot back up to the top of the leader's board.

Meanwhile Guy played against Zsolt who, having already beaten Guy in the Main round, repeated his success, this time in the Consolation round. In the Last Chance, Johan won the final against Toon. With this victory, Johan still has a good chance to top the leaders board but we'll have to wait until next month.

So, as you can see nothing is decided yet in the general ranking. I therefore invite you all to come for the big nail-biting final on the 23rd December!

Het eerste tornooi in het casino van Venlo was een succes. Er waren nog wat kleine probleempjes tengevolge van de onervarenheid van meerdere spelers maar deze zullen in volgende versies ook verbeterd worden.

Het was een gratis tornooi met 1000 euro prijzengeld gesponsord door het casino. Naar ik begrepen heb zit backgammon niet in hun folio en kunnen ze dus geen inschrijvingsgeld vragen, de managers waren echter zeer enthousiast over het tornooi en willen in de toekomst nog tornooien organiseren.

Er waren 27 deelnemers waarvan de meesten klanten van het casino waren. De meesten hadden totaal geen ervaring met een backgammontornooi, maar er waren ook enkele sterkere spelers, waaronder Gordon Cross. Verder waren er drie Nederlandse tornooispelers, Ed Baars, Paul van Rooijen en Rogier van Gemert, twee Belgische deelnemers, Laky Vasilios en Dan Pascu, en tenslotte nog één speler uit Aken, Sebastiaan Kreyerhoff.

Het tornooi werd gewonnen door Paul van Rooijen die in de finale Gordon Cross versloeg. De consolation werd gewonnen door Rogier van Gemert tegen Chris.

Brussels Friendly 8 (Friday 4 November - 13 players) proved a near walk-over in the Main tournament (matches to 5) for Sassan KACHANIAN with four rather easy wins over Guy VAN MIDDELEM (1st round), Maly HOSSEINPOUR (2nd round), Ken SHIBATA (semi-final) and Pierre FAUTRE (final) to capture his first Brussels Friendly title after a second place in BBF 7 last month. Pierre was nearly the day's hero because he ousted Belgium ranking leaders Toon VAN HERREWEGHEN and Michel LAMOTE in the first two rounds before sealing a victory against his wife Brigitte COLLET.

Maly had a good run in the Consolation tournament (matches to 3) with wins against Hans ZENGER and Manuel BAPTISTA but Brigitte ended his streak. She couldn't take the last hurdle, though, and organiser Guy took the 3rd place.

Mario MARINIELLO beat Johan SEGERS and Zsolt TASNADI in the Last Chance tournament (matches to 1) but Toon prevailed by winning in the final against Ken.

The Royal Orée Tennis Hockey Bridge Club was as usual the venue for a succesful evening. Master Chef Eddy was eager to present us his 'Boulettes Sauce Tomates' with crispy French fries accompagnied by a Duvel or (better) a Château Montrose 1996.

Four times Johan had already reached the final and four times he had lost. For the fifth time, Johan, after have beaten Patrick and Luc, reached the final against Marc. After an impressive start Marc was leading with 4-0. But it was without taking in account Johan's determination. He was ready this time to win and he did so, even under extreme time pressure with only 15 seconds on the clock left for the two post-Crawford games. Congratulations Johan!

Patrick won the final of the Consolation against Luc and Toon won the Last chance final against Guy.

No new leader this time. Toon is still the leader but Patrick, thanks to his victory in the Consolation, is coming closer. Johan coming closer as well, jumping from the fifth to the third place in the general ranking.

Two Championships to go and still nothing is decided.

A record number of 17 players gathered on Friday 7th October for Brussels Friendly 7. As usual, some of them enjoyed - before the games - the 'Pain de veau' or 'Filet Américain' with delicious french fries and some Jupiler, Duvel or red wine. To avoid a single match in a fifth round in the main (to 5 points) and due to a slightly bothering auricular operation in the morning, organizer Guy VAN MIDDELEM decided not to play as to have a complete bracket of 16 for an exciting tournament. And so it happened (and Guy enjoyed it).

Upsets in the first round : the victory of Manuel BAPTISTA against four times winner and title holder Toon VAN HERREWEGHEN (so BBF 7 would have a brand new podium), while newcomer Brigitte FAUTRE ousted former finalist Aurélie STERCKX and the defeat of our friend from the Netherlands, Paul VAN DIJKE, from the dicy hands of Fakhri SOLTANI. Michel LAMOTE, the man in form, escaped against Alain CHIF in the 1st round with some well-timed doubles in the double match point game; he continued his impressive string of victories (see the Belgian rating list) by beating Zsolt TASNADI and Brigitte (who won a crusty family-affair against her husband Pierre FAUTRE) to reach the final against Sassan KACHANIAN, winner of consecutively Akhbar SOLTANI, Fakhri SALASI and Ken SHIBATA (Japan).

A lot of kibbitzers watched a well-played final with finally Michel emerging for his first Brussels Friendly victory. Congratulations!

In the consolation (played to 3 points), Ken won the final against Manuel.

Dominique STUYCK had a good run in the last chance by beating Aurélie and her daughter Laure MOMMAERTS but fell from grace in the third round when, throwing a bad double 5, she had to leave a shot in the bear-off against Paul, who 'unsportingly' seized his chance. François GUEYDON (France) had difficult opponents and moments in all three tourneys, losing at the end against Zsolt who beat Paul in the final.

• Brussels Friendly 8 will be held on Friday 4th November (confirmed, same location);
• Brussels Friendly 9 on Friday 2nd December (to be confirmed);

Last Friday, after 9 months of leadership, Patrick had to hand over his first place to Toon. Seven players were present, which was just not enough to organize a Main, Consolation and Last chance tournament. Instead, a Round Robin consisting of 3-point matches was organised. At the end of the tournament, 2 players finished with 4 victories, Toon and Guy. As Toon had won against Guy, Toon was declared the grand winner. With his victory, Toon earned 40 points, taking the leadership in the general ranking. Guy, finishing second, received 20 points, moving from the fifth to the third place. Zsolt, Johan and Patrick each had 3 victories, but in view of the mutual results, Zsolt ended third, receiving 10 points, while Johan's fourth place put him just below the point winning podium. With three tournaments to go before the final result, everything can still happen.

On a sunny and warm Friday evening the 2nd of September, 10 players gathered for the Brussels Friendly 6 edition. Guy Van Middelem welcomed some 'new' players: really new was Ken Shibata from Japan (introduced with a Belgian Jupiler), Annick Hasdenteufel from France came for the first time and old fellow Maurits Pino from the Netherlands recognised the Royal Orée Hockey Tennis and Bridge club as his bridge club in an ancient past. A chouette started on the terrasse while some enjoyed Lasagna verde or Bavette aux quatre poivres, duly accompanied with a Duvel or a Rosé Château Montrose.

Previous winners Toon Van Herreweghen (3x) and Guy were unlucky with the draw: they had to play a first round against respectively Manuel Baptista and Zsolt Tasnadi while all the other players benefit from a bye. But Brussels Friendly carries not so much surprises: both Toon and Guy managed to win their 3 encounters to meet again (for the 5th time in 6 editions) in the final of the Main tournament. At a 1-1 score in a 5-point match 5 (4-away, 4-away), Guy mistakenly took (helped with a few Duvels) a dramatic 4-cube -- unsportingly presented -- which left him with only 18% match winning chances. Guy duly had to pay the bill for his reckless behaviour: Toon won Brussels Friendly for the 4th time in a row!

The Consolation tournament (3) final gave a revenge for Bert Van Kerckhove for his 2nd round loss against Johan Segers -- well done, Bert.

Ken Shibata (unlucky in the Main against Guy - who had a winning 5-5 last throw) managed to get home with a cheque by winning the Last Chance, beating Alain Chif in the semi-final and later on Maurits.

Next Brussels Friendly, no. 7, same venue, on Friday 7 October. See you with great pleasure!

Leuven Autovrij 2011 Image Gallery

For the first time, the Backgammon Club Leuven participated in Leuven Autovrij, a public event during which cars were banned from the city center.

On a beautiful spot on the Bondgenotenlaan, Leuven's main axis, visitors were attracted by Biggammon, our giant (2.7m x 3.3m) outdoor backgammon board. Events took an unexpected turn when a demonstration game between Marc and Johan suddenly got interrupted by an invasion of toddlers using the colourful board as a play area and the checkers and the dice as toys.

The chairs at the backgammon boards displayed on a line of tables were frequently occupied. Notably, many children played the game too, their parents participating enthousiastically.

Coincidentally, Paul van Dijke (NL) was in Leuven that day as well. He smoothly joint our crew of club members initiating people in the game.

Walter Meuwis' first participation in our Leuven Club Championship immediately proved to be a succesful one. He won the final against Michel Lamote, the winner of the July tournament. Zsolt and Toon met twice during the tournament, first in the main and then in the final of the consolation, and each time Zsolt was the better one, leaving Toon behind on the fourth place. In the final of the Last Chance, Luc defeated Johan.

Notice of participation

Not later than two months before the start of the tournament, every national team that intends to participate must inform the organizer of its acceptance of the invitation.

Number of players: 4 players, 1 reserve

Teams are formed by players of same nationality or permanent residents representing their nation.

Each team shall have a captain, who may also be one of the players (or reserve). Duties:

• Administrative supervision of the team
• Liaison with the organizing authorities and Tournament Director.
• Leadership of the team matches

Not later than one month before the start of the tournament, every National Team that has entered must notify the following details to the Tournament Director:
(a) name and surname of the team captain;
(b) name of each team member (one first name in full, initials of additional first names, surname);
(c) GridGammon nickname of the team captain and players (reserve)
(d) team captain and players (reserve) are required to submit a valid email address.
(e) fixed board order from table #1 player up to table #4 player

The fixed board order cannot be changed during the tournament.

FOR THOSE PLAYERS who DONT HAVE GRIDGAMMON ACCOUNT, it will be provided FREE Of charge.

Team Captain can replace any regular player each round with the reserve player. He must notify the Tournament Director of this before the scheduled match starts.

FEDERATION/ASSOCIATION of players can select the team based either on their ratings, national championships, ranking lists, qualifing tournaments or any method it deems appropriate.

There will be no entry fee to this tournament.

System of Play

The contest shall take the form of a Swiss system tournament with fixed rules for pairings and random draw at the start of the tournament. Matches to 11 points.

By sending its almost strongest possible team (at least according to the rating list), Leuven was determined to take revenge on Hasselt for the defeat of April 8, 2011, when Hasselt took away Leuven's challenger status. Leuven won, but the victory wasn't an easy one, being decided by the very last match, the one between Patrick and Luc, at a moment when Leuven was leading 8-7, with visitor Leuven needing the victory to overtake its opponent.

Leading 3-2 in a 5-point match, Patrick decided not to double and play for the gammon when bearing off against Luc deuce-point game. Some scary moments followed when Patrick had to leave a direct shot, Luc having almost closed his board. But luck was on Leuven's side: Luc missed and could not save the gammon race either.

Captain Toon achieved a perfect score (4/4), leaving his opponents no chances. Guy and myself (Johan) only got 1/4, but to our consolation each of our little points proved indispensable in the narrow victory.

In my match to Walter, the following endgame cube action arose. At a 0-0 score (5-point match) I was holding a 4-cube and contemplating an 8-cube in the following position:

Most likely I (X) need only two more rolls to bear off my four remaining checkers, so if Walter (0) takes, he will have to roll a double 3 or better (probability 4/36 = 11 percent) to win the match.

If Walter passes the 8-cube he will be trailing 0-4 Crawford, with match winning chances of about 15 percent.

Based on this argument I doubled and expected Walter to pass. To my surprise, he took. Horror struck: after I took two checkers out, Walter produced double 4, winning the match on the spot. All bystanders agreed firmly that Walter's take was incorrect, but Walter kept on defending his decision.

So actually, Walter's take was correct and a pass would have been a horrible blunder. The reason, missed by me and all bystanders but correctly spotted by Walter, is that Walter also wins if I roll a 1 in each of my following two rolls, which happens almost 10 percent of the time (11/36 x 11/36 = 121/1296 = 0.0934 to be precise). In combination with some other sequences in which I do not manage to take off my 4 remaining checkers in 2 rolls, this gives Walter almost 22 percent winning chances, a very comfortable take.

"De Langste Dag" is the name of Leuven's yearly outdoor shopping event at the end of June, right after midsummer's night. For the fourth time, the event was also the scene for Zócalo, a cultural marketplace where clubs and cultural organisations from Leuven have the opportunity to present themselves at a larger public. For the first time, the Backgammon Club Leuven was present as an independent club as well. Previously, the Backgammon Club Leuven had always been represented by its mother club De Speelduivel.

Located on the Grote Markt, between Leuven's famous city hall and the St.-Pieters cathedral, we had a 2m long table at our disposal, on which were arranged a number of boards, books, and flyers. The struggle with the rain and the wind to keep our exhibition material from getting wet or flying away was by times heroic. Still, Johan, Marc and Patrick managed to find the time to distribute some flyers, have a chat, and even play some friendly games with people passing by our table.

In the meantime, we also had friendly exchanges with some other clubs, notably the Go Club Leuven, De Speelduivel, and chess club Leuven Centraal. The latter club attracted quite some spectators thanks to their huge outdoor chessboard.

Participation at Zócalo took quite some time and energy while the direct pay-off in terms of new members is questionable. Still, being visible is a must if we are to attract more players. More focused initiatives aimed at targetting groups of people that have a large chance of being interested might be more productive, however.

What a performance: Guy did not lose a single game the whole evening. Four times in a row, his opponents were left with no chance whatsoever, Guy cruising through each match 5-0. The June session of the Backgammon Leuven Championship 2011 was all Guy's.

Thanks to his victory, Guy has now also joined the group of Patrick's direct chasers: Toon, Johan, and Luc. Patrick's second place allowed him to increase the distance with the remainder of the pack. Luc won the final of the consolation against Henri and Toon won the final of the last chance.

Patrick managed well to defend his first place, but next time he will be facing up to 4 opponents eager to take his place.

Brussels Friendly 4 on the 3rd of June in the Orée Tennis Hockey Bridge Club in Woluwe was an exciting evening with some very good food on the terrasse ('étuvée de saint-jacques et langoustines sauce beurre blanc', 'fricassée de pintade aux cèpes et risotto') while looking at tennis (Federer - Djokovic) and football (a disappointing 1-1 between Belgium and Turkey). And of course there was a backgammon tournament too with a few new names : Maly Hosseinpour, François Gueydon, Aurélie Sterckx, Manuel Baptista and Wietse De Langhe.

Organiser Guy Van Middelem was happy to see 12 players joining in but he fell from grace when he lost in the first round against François. Our French newcomer continued by winning against Alain Chif in the second round after a very exciting game (François nearly shaked hands by admitting his defeat when he remained with four checkers on the bar while Alain was half-way bearing off but surprisingly he turned the game completely on). More surprises to come : Manuel beat Michel Lamote in the first round after being 0-4 down on 5. Aurélie won against Zsolt Tasnadi and continued her strike by ousting out Manuel in the semi-final. Meanwhile Toon Van Herreweghen beat Sassan Kachanian in the first round with a four-cube in the last rolls (both players had two checkers left, one on the 4 and one on the 3 point ; Toon rolled 5-2 - missing - but Sassan rolled 5-2 too). Then Toon sealed victories against Paul Van Dijke in the second round, against François in the semi-final and against a very courageous Aurélie in the final : 5-3 to clinch his second Brussels Friendly.

Around 0.30 hour, Michel won the final of the consolation (3 points) against Guy while François won the last chance (1 point) against Alain.

Last Friday, 10 players participated in the fifth tournament day of the Leuven Championship 2011. Luc Palmans from Hasselt also came over in an attempt to win for a second time.

We also had the pleasure to see Lieve again, the only female representative amongst all these macho men ;o)

The final of the Main between Johan and Luc was a déjà-vu of our third tournament day, in March. For Johan it was his fourth final already. Could Johan beat Luc this time and finally get his first tournament victory? Could he take this great opportunity to extend his lead and come closer to Patrick, who was that same moment struggling with Guy in the Last Chance? Unfortunately for Johan, but fortunately for Luc and Patrick, Johan did not make it and lost his fourth final. If we were in the world of cycling we'd call him our Poulidor, after the French cyclist who finished 3 times in second place in the Tour de France. In the Consolation, Toon beat Zsolt; the Last Chance was won by Guy.

Even if Johan lost the final, he and Toon are coming ever closer to current the leader, Patrick. With only two tournament participations, Luc is already fourth in the ranking. Our next Leuven Championship on 24 June might see a new leader -- or will the current leader persist? If you want to be part of it I suggest to meet us next time!

In the margin of the tournament, Toon and Johan played a number of longer matches to get some experience with Neil's numbers. These form a handy tool to approximate match winning chances at given match scores. Knowledge of these match winning chances is important for correct cube handling, which at certain match scores can differ significantly from cube handling during money play.

Locatie

Zoals steeds was het een zonnig weertje, 28°C. Locatie was zoals steeds het Golden Tulip hotel, met een speciale backgammonrate van 80€/nacht, goed voor een mooie en zeer ruime kamer, ontbijt en dinner inbegrepen, en gratis drank, snacks en sigaretten in het casino. Aangezien dit alweer mijn derde verblijf hier was ga ik de volgende keer (in december) eens iets anders proberen, het Merit hotel bijvoorbeeld.

Spelers

Met 78 spelers uit 20 landen waaronder Rusland, Georgië, Bulgarije, Israel, Libanon, Japan, USA, Noorwegen, Kroatië, Italië, Spanje, Portugal, en bekende topspelers zoals Falafel, Michy, Matt Cohn Geier, Paul Weaver, Stephan Nuniyants, Ricardo Mallas, Mario SeQueira, Tobias Hellwag, Jürgen Orlowski en vele anderen was dit wederom een sterk spelersveld, ook al viel het toernooi samen met dat in Velden. De vriendschap tussen de Israëlische en Libanese spelers en tussen de Turkse en Griekse spelers bewees weer dat de backgammon community zich boven de politieke conflicten stelt.

Geen inschrijvingen voor de Intermediate. De registratiekosten voor de Masters en de Advanced werden volledig door het casino betaald. Tevens was er 20.000€ added money door het casino.

European Doubles Championship

Deze werden op woensdag en donderdag gehouden met 16 deelnemende teams. Zelf kwam ik pas aan op donderdag in het midden van de finale tussen "team Falafel" Matvey 'Falafel' Natanzon (Israël) en Burak Gören tegen "team Turkey" Hilmi Göchan en Oguz User (Turkije). De teams hadden in de halve finales gewonnen van respectievelijk Yancho Hristov en Bozhidar Stoyanov (Bulgarije) en Talat Papatya en Erman Sari (Turkije).

De finale was een 17-punter. Toen ik aankwam, leidde team Turkey met 15-2. Team Falafel vocht echter zeer sterk terug naar 15-10 en zelfs tot 15-15. Dan slaagde het turkse team er toch in om er 16-15 van te maken en in het Crawford game haalde het turkse team de Europese titel binnen.

Advanced

Met 24 spelers en 4 re-buys werd het tornooi gewonnen door de uiterst sympathieke en nu dolgelukkige Ismail Yildiz (Turkije) tegen Alexander Penelov (Bulgarije). De consolation werd gewonnen door Allatin Özaltin (Turkije) tegen Nectarios Sarafidis (Griekenland) en de last chance door Fevsi Aslioglu (Turkije).

Masters

Met 54 spelers en 10 re-buys (waaronder Falafel, Orlowski en Michy) was er een full sheet van 64 spelers.

In de eerste ronde kreeg ik de kersverse European Doubles Champion Hilmi Göchan (Turkije) tegen. Ik stond al snel 6-0 voor en wist mijn voorsprong te behouden met 10-3, 11-4, 12-4, Crawford. Hilmi kwam nog terug tot 12-9 maar ik bleef geconcentreerd spelen en won met 13-9.

In de tweede ronde kreeg ik met Matt Cohn Geier (USA) weer een klepper van formaat als tegenstander. Bij een 11-10 voorsprong kreeg ik een zeer interessante situatie op het bord, bijna exact dezelfde positie als de week ervoor in de kwartfinale van de Nordic Open, waar ik op 13-11 (2-away 4-away) met 11 pips voorsprong en 6 checkers op 7,8 en 9 tegen 2 checkers van mijn tegenstander op mijn 5-punt had gecubed en na de take won. De analyse achteraf gaf aan dat de cube een blunder was van 1.72. Nu zit ik in bijna dezelfde positie, maar ik verdubbel toch, want Matt is een crack in speedgammon en ik heb op dat ogenblik nog 63 seconden op mijn klok tegenover 57 seconden voor Matt. Deze cube kostte Matt weer wat bedenktijd en met 43 seconden over past hij en sta ik op 12-10. Het Crawford game werd opnieuw een harde strijd die uiteindelijk door Matt gewonnen werd, 12-11, waarna ik nog 23 seconden overhoud en Matt nog slechts 14 seconden. Na een free drop wordt het double match punt, in zware wederzijdse tijdsnood en onder grote publieke belangstelling. Helaas was het laatste game niet zo interessant: ik wordt omvergerold in de opening, krijg met wat geluk toch nog een ace-point game, maar schiet in Matt's bear off naast zijn blot. Na 15 games wint Matt de match met nog 2 seconden op zijn klok.

In de Consolation (9-punter) krijg ik Frank Simon (Duitsland) als tegenstander. Ik begin zeer sterk met een backgammon 3-0. Bij 7-7 besluit Frank na een gelijkopgaande opening te cuben, een eenvoudige take voor mij. Ik hit los op mijn 1-punt en nadat Frank heb ik met 4-3 een moeilijke beslissing: ofwel het 1-punt maken zodat ik een 5-punts bord heb terwijl Frank 2 checkers op mijn 5-punt heeft, 1 checker op de bar en 2 andere blots die ik mogelijk nog kan hitten, ofwel met de 3 een tweede checker op de bar zetten maar met het risico dat hij een 1 gooit en ik achter een 5-prime moet opkomen op 24 of 23. Conclusie: ik maak mijn 1-punt. Bij de volgende 2 rolls slaag ik er niet in om één van de twee andere blots te raken en ben ik verplicht om mijn laatste checker naar mijn 9-punt te spelen. Frank rolt de 5-4 joker en wint de match, 7-9.

In de Last Chance win ik de eerste match gemakkelijk met 5-0 tegen Dusnu Catin (Turkije). Daarna speel ik tegen Cem Önger (Turkije). Met een 1-0 voorsprong herdubbelt mijn tegenstander zowaar naar 4 in een race met 10 checkers en 48 pips voor hem tegen 9 checkers en 49 pips voor mij. Natuurlijk neem ik om te verdubbelen naar 8 voor de match. Helaas waren zijn Catin's volgende twee worpen dubbel 5, genoeg om de match te winnen.

In de Last Chance won Stephan Nuniyants (USA) van Erman Sari (Turkije). In de consolation verloren Omari Dvali (Georgië) en Mario Sequeira (Portugal) de halve finales en werd de finale gespeeld door Arild Idsoe (Noorwegen), die de week ervoor tijdens de Nordic Open tweemaal net naast het prijzengeld gegrepen had, en door Ahmet Ercan (Turkije), die vorig jaar in december de finale van de Intermediate tegen uw reporter verloren had. Het werd een zeer spannende 11-punter die culmineerde in een double match overwinning door Idsoe.

De halve finales in de main bracket leverden ook de benodigde sensatie: Michihito "Michy" Kageyama (Japan) speelde tegen Bülent Bahar (Turkije) en kwam al snel 1-7 achter om daarna de match helemaal naar zich toe te trekken en met 15-7 te winnen. In de andere halve finale kwam Tobias Hellwag (Duitsland) tegen Simon Pankvelashvili (Georgië) al snel tot een 10-1 voorsprong waarna Simon aan een prachtige remonte begon om 10-11 voor te komen. Uiteindelijk bleek Tobias toch te sterk en won met 15-12.

De finale tussen Tobias en Michy werd zoals gewoonlijk op het podium van het casino gespeeld en op een metersgroot scherm uitgezonden. In het begin ging de match op 17 punten gelijk op naar 4-4 en 7-7 waarna Tobias de leiding nam met 11-8 en Michy terugkwam naar 12-11 en 15-15. Het volgende game werd na een vroege cube een echte thriller. Michy neemt de leiding met een 1,3,5,6,7 bord en nog 1 checker op het 20-punt en 2 checkers op het 13-punt, terwijl Tobias op de bar staat en het 1,6,7,8,9 punt heeft, een blot op het 3-punt, en 3 checkers op zijn 7-punt. Tobias rolt 2-2, iedereen denkt dat hij 23-21-5 hit en 3 cover gaat spelen. De consternatie was dan ook zeer groot bij alle toeschouwers toen hij 23 5(3) speelde. Michy rolt 3-1 en hit gevolgd door Tobias die weer een 2 rolt. Michy slaagt er in de volgende rolls niet in om aan Tobias zijn home te ontsnappen en moet zijn prime beginnen op te breken terwijl Tobias daarentegen met een 6-6 het betere bord verkrijgt om uiteindelijk de match te winnen. Over zijn beslissing verklaarde Tobias achteraf het volgende: met de cover op 3 liet hij het 5-punt open, met een gemakkelijkere stelling voor Michy om binnen te komen en te ontsnappen. Door het 7-punt op te breken bezet hijzelf het 5-punt en i.p.v. de 4-prime op 6,7,8,9 heeft hij nog altijd een (weliswaar onderbroken) 4-prime op 5,6,8,9.

Side events

Zoals gewoonlijk was er ook weer heel wat side events action: talloze jackpots op 10, 20, 50 en 100€, een 1-pointer KO met 64 deelnemers die gewonnen werd door Aziz Yilmaz (Turkije) en een super jackpot (500€) met 8 spelers die door Frank Simon (Duitsland) gewonnen werd tegen Vincenzo Riceputi (Italië).

Prijsuitreiking

Zoals altijd was er een leuke prijsuitreiking met live muziek. Tevens werden er enkele special player awards uitgereikt aan Ilker Göçhan (Turkije), Yancho Hristov (Bulgarije), Naoya Kihara (Japan). Ook schonk de Turkse liga ISTAVDER 2 mooie borden aan Michy als prijs in de benefiettornooien ten voordele van de slachtoffers van de aardbeving. Het beste bewijs dat het een leuke avond was: we hebben Falafel op de dansvloer gekregen!

Nieuws

• Damian Plesec (Slovenië) liet weten dat hij in januari met 5 spelers naar Antwerpen komt.
• Van de filmopnamen die Anna vorig jaar op verscheidene tornooien gemaakt heeft, wordt een documentaire gemaakt. De eerste vertoning is in Punta Cana (Dominicaanse Republiek) in november en de tweede vertoning is in december tijdens de Cyprus Open.
• Na 10 jaar gaat Shiva na het december toernooi in Cyprus stoppen met toernooien te organiseren. De World Backgammon Association blijft wel bestaan en hij blijft de points race doen. De toernooien in de USA gaat hij aan iemand anders overlaten en de EBGT draagt hij over aan Fuat Erdahl.

Locatie

Net zoals vorig jaar vond de Nordic Open plaats in het Hotel Scandic in het centrum van Kopenhagen, ongeveer tegenover het Centraal Station. De grote zaal was uitstekend geschikt voor een dergelijk toernooi. Als hotel viel het me toch een beetje tegen. Niet de beste kwaliteit-prijs-verhouding die ik al heb meegemaakt.

In de omgeving zijn er vele goede en goedkope hotels. En er zijn restaurants à volonté in alle kleuren en maten. Naar de Noma zijn we niet geweest. Die ligt wandelsgewijs gesproken aan de andere kant van de stad.

Toernooi

Er waren iets minder deelnemers dan vorig jaar, maar toch nog altijd meer dan driehonderd: Champions (106), Advance en Intermediate (iets minder, de exacte cijfers heb ik niet voor me liggen). Maar ook op de eerste dag was er toernooi voor 40 "echte" beginners. Als de Denen die vinden, waarom wij dan niet?

Datum

Witte donderdag en Stille vrijdag zijn officiële feestdagen in Denemarken. Dat verklaart waarschijnlijk de datum en het succes van het toernooi.

Systeem

In elke groep was er een verfijnde double elimination: de main (matchen van 17 punten bij de champions) begon met een tabel van 124 en ging verder tot er vier deelnemers over waren. Wie verloor ging naar een progressive consolation of "fighters bracket" (matchen van 11 punten bij de champions) die ook eindigde met vier overblijvers. Wie bijvoorbeeld in de main in de eerste ronde verloor, moest liefst zes keer winnen in de fighters bracket om te overleven.

Die laatste acht speelden dan op de slotdag een k.o.-toernooi (matchen van best of 3 sets van 7 punten). Deze acht spelers zaten in het geld. De overigen hadden gelijktijdig de gebruikelijke last chance met prijzen voor de twee finalisten.

Een nadeel is wel dat de vier overblijvers uit de main (de halve finalisten in een gewoon toernooi) nu plots teruggeworpen worden naar de kwartfinales.

Deelnemers

Als je met de kwaliteit van het deelnemers rekening houdt, besef je pas welke berg je moet beklimmen om tot in het Walhalla te geraken. Met concrete cijfers kan ik het niet bewijzen, maar algemeen wordt aangenomen dat de Nordic Open gemiddeld (qua error rate) waarschijnlijk het best bezette toernooi ter wereld is. Denemarken als backgammonland hoeft niet meer voorgesteld te worden. Bij de champions spelen de sterke Denen die geld hebben. Bij de Advance vind je de sterke Denen die geen of weinig geld hebben.

Naast een onuitputtelijke rij Larsens, Andersens, Sörensens, Nielsens en Jensens, waren er ook toppers uit USA (Falafel, Cohn-Geier, Wells, Nuniyants, O’Laughlin, Mattig), Japan (Mochy en Michy), Duitsland (Hellwag, Jonas, Wiebusch) en Frankrijk (Decultot, Babillon). Er waren minder niet-Deense Scandinaviërs dan je zou verwachten, maar met de Noren Fredriksen en Idsoe, tweevoudig ex-wereldkampioen Grandstedt uit Zweden en de Finnen Salo en Haaksila waren ze kwalitatief goed vertegenwoordigd.

Denemarken tegen de Rest van de Wereld

Net zoals vorig jaar was er een wedstrijd "Denemarken tegen de Rest van de Wereld". Voor alle informatie daarover verwijs ik naar de bekende websites (uitslagen op Chicago Backgammon; commentaar op de website van Stick Rice, enz.). Tijdens het toernooi zelf was er weinig aandacht voor dit gebeuren. Alleen als er gespeeld werd (en zeker de afsluitende "all consolation") was er interesse, en stonden enkele tientallen toeschouwers op stoelen en banken rond de speeltafel.

De aanwezigheid van die wereldtoppers maakte het toernooi weer interessanter. Een aantal van de sterkste Denen (Morten Holm, Mads Andersen, Sander Lyllof) waren er weliswaar voor de wedstrijd tegen de Rest van de Wereld, maar namen niet deel aan het toernooi. Enkele dagen pokeren is voor hen waarschijnlijk lucratiever dan backgammon spelen in een toernooitje met slechts 800 euro inschrijving.

Een leuke extra

In het schaken kennen we de "topborden". In Kopenhagen had men een "VIP"-ruimte gemaakt met tien tafels waar de ex-winnaars van de Nordic Open en ex-wereldkampioenen mochten spelen, met naamkaartjes op hun tafel. Mooi, en dan vraag je je af: waarom eigenlijk niet aan alle tafels bordnummers en naamkaartjes?

Missed opportunity: de gokchinees

Wie was de favoriet? Onbegonnen werk om dit te voorspellen, maar ik zou mijn geld op Ralf Jonas hebben gezet. Deze zakenman uit Lubeck (leeftijd ergens in de vijftig) behoorde een tiental jaar geleden tot de absolute top. Hij won twee keer de Masters in Parijs, en in die periode speelde hij vele moneygames tegen de legendarische Jerry Grandell. Ik heb nog een match van hem uit het WK 2005 tegen François Tardieu. Hij won niet alleen, maar had zelfs een iets betere error rate dan de Fransman! Na enkele jaren afwezigheid is hij blijkbaar weer teruggekeerd in de backgammonwereld.

Een geheime tip van Palmans! Ik wou dat ik dit gerechtsdeurwaardelijk voor aanvang van het toernooi had laten registreren. Maar ik loop vooruit op de zaken.

De Lage Landen

Hoewel Kopenhagen helemaal niet ver ligt, hebben nog niet vele Nederlanders en Belgen aan de Nordic Open meegedaan. Maar de laatste jaren is er toch elke keer een handvol Laaglanders aanwezig. Voor mij was het de derde achtereenvolgende deelname. En als ik slechts één groot toernooi per jaar zou spelen, dan is de Nordic zonder twijfel mijn eerste keuze.

Philip Vischjager (ook sinds enkele jaren een trouwe deelnemer) en Hans-Willem Capel waren de twee Nederlanders bij de Champions. Paulus van Rooyen en Walter Meuwis namen net zoals vorig jaar deel bij de Advanced.

De Champions

Donderdagnamiddag en -avond vonden de eerste twee ronden plaats. Met 106 deelnemers hadden we een tabel van 128. Geen van ons drieën had een bye. Hans verloor van de Brit Ray Jansari. Philip en ik wonnen onze eerste match, maar gingen 's avonds in de tweede ronde ten onder.

In die tweede ronde mocht ik spelen tegen tweevoudig ex-winnaar Karsten Bredahl, een absolute topspeler uit Denemarken. Een redelijke showman ("I don’t wanna wake up in sweat with double six" bij de bear-off tegen een ace point game of "I don’t have any reference position!" toen ik hem een cube gaf in een uiterst bizarre stelling), maar wel prettig om tegen te spelen. Hoewel hij behoorlijk snel speelt, is elke zet weldoordacht, en hij heeft een goede feeling voor de momenten waarop er echt moet nagedacht worden. En uiteraard heeft hij zoals alle topspelers een uitstekende techniek.

Paulus was zo vriendelijk deze match te noteren. Je kan de match naspelen. Ik moet er wel nog een analyse bijschrijven. Dit herinnert me aan een interview met schaakgrootmeester (toen nog internationaal meester) Luc Winants. Tijdens de jaren '80 kreeg hij enkele keren de gelegenheid om in het SWIFT-toernooi in Brussel tegen de wereldtop te spelen. Hij zei toen (ik citeer uit mijn hoofd): "Als je je partijen tegen Kasparov, Karpov, Timman, ... niet analyseert, welke dan wel?"

Hoe is het om tegen zo’n wereldtopper te spelen? Voor mij was het niet de eerste keer. Tegen enkele grote kanonnen heb ik al gewonnen, maar uiteraard ook een aantal keren verloren. Behalve dat je weet dat ze behoorlijk minder fouten maken dan de meeste spelers die aan de overkant van je backgammonbord zitten, lijkt het ogenschijnlijk weinig verschil te maken. Ze slaan blots, maken punten, lopen met hun checkers naar huis of hopen op een late shot in een ace point game.

In bijvoorbeeld schaken zie je snel het verschil tussen de grote en de kleine jongens. Backgammon is meer een onzichtbare kunst zoals het kaarttellen van een blackjackspeler. Pas bij een aandachtige en uitgebreide analyse ontdek je de subtiliteit van hun spel.

Philip verloor een tafeltje verder van Tore Fredriksen, een heel sterke Noor, die ook nog eens aan de Rotterdam Open heeft deelgenomen.

's Zaterdags wachtte ons de lange beklimming van de Fighters bracket. Ik stortte al onmiddellijk in het ravijn. De Amerikaan Matt Cohn-Geier (nog een wereldtopper, die later de superjackpot zou winnen) was de man die de laatste nagel waar ik aan hing te spartelen uit de rotswand trok. Bij een 0-3 achterstand was hij in een niet bepaald goedgetimede 1-3 backgame gekropen. Ik droomde al van een 7-0, totdat ik plots de waarschijnlijk grootste anti-joker uit mijn carrière gooide: dubbel vier en ik kon mijn vier stenen van het zespunt naar het tweepunt spelen. You got the picture? Enkele heel hoge torentjes met diepe dalen. En al snel werden de neervallende blotjes één voor één opgepikt en werd ik met een recube naar vier uit mijn lijden verlost. Daarna lukte me niets meer en ging ik roemloos met 4-11 ten onder.

Philip en Hans konden wel nog enkele keren winnen, en Hans geraakte zelfs tot in de vijfde ronde van de Fighters bracket. In elk geval werd hij pas zondagnamiddag uitgeschakeld.

Na mijn nederlaag noteerde ik nog een match van Karsten Bredahl, de man die me in de main had uitgeschakeld. Een mens moet zijn tijd toch zinvol besteden. En bij Bredahl valt altijd wel iets te beleven.

Zondag was voor mij duimen draaien, hoewel ik me zeker geamuseerd heb bij het bekijken van een aantal matchen. Ondertussen vielen de topspelers als vliegen: Mochy, Falafel, Cohn-Geier, Grandstedt, Fredriksen, Bredahl, Trabolt, Hellwag, enz. Na vele avonturen hadden we zondagavond acht overblijvers met als grootste namen Michy en Jonas (yes!).

Op paasmaandag speelden deze acht man om de titel.

Verheugend voor de Laaglanders was ook de aanwezigheid van de piepjonge Deen Christian Sörensen, die in Nederland woont. Ik kende hem eigenlijk niet, maar hij heeft al in bijvoorbeeld Den Bosch gespeeld. In Nederland staat men vol respect voor deze jongeman, en in Kopenhagen bewees hij zijn kunnen. Uiteindelijk bereikte hij de finale tegen Jonas (yes!) en na een zeer spannende driesetter verloor hij en was Jonas toernooiwinnaar (yes!).

Ik hoop dat die matchen snel gepubliceerd worden, want er waren enkele momenten waar ik van mening verschilde met de spelers. Vooral die cube van Jonas in de afsluitende set bij 3-away/6-away interesseert me: ook Sorensen leek niet onder de indruk. Take en snelle recube voor de match en het toernooi in een moeilijke prime vs prime.

De Last chance duurde voor mij amper tien minuten: dansen, cube, close-out, gammon, Crawford, kruip-door sluip-door en dobbelstenen terug in het doosje. Philip en Hans geraakten een beetje verder, maar sneuvelden nog ver van de finale. Die werd gewonnen door de Fin Haanranta, die de bekende Fransman Babillon versloeg.

Advanced

76 deelnemers van goede kwaliteit. Vorig jaar speelde Paulus zich vlot naar de laatste acht, maar botste in de kwartfinales op één of andere Viking, en Walter beperkte zich toen tot de lange rokade (drie nullen op een rij).

Dit jaar was het net andersom. Hoewel niet zo vlot als Paulus een jaar eerder, bereikte Walter na een feilloos parcours dit keer de laatste acht. Hij wist enkele spannende matchen te winnen. Paulus was ook nu zo vriendelijk om een match van hem te noteren, en daarna uitgebreid te bespreken met de cijfers van Snowie bij de hand.

Een sterk staaltje van coaching, en Paulus wist met meer overtuiging en kennis van zaken (en de back-up van Snowie!) dan ik Walter op zijn foutjes te wijzen.

Goed gewapend met de opgedane kennis vatte hij de strijd voor de titel aan op de laatste dag, maar ook hij werd door een Viking (nu een andere) tot de orde geroepen. Een mooie geldprijs was zijn lot.

Overigens is zo'n trainingssessie met drie man en Snowie uiterst interessant en leerzaam. Bepaalde kennis wordt bevestigd en bepaalde pijnlijke blunders en denkfouten komen aan het licht. Zeker aan te bevelen! Twee jaar geleden heb ik met Michel Lamote op de luchthaven van Kopenhagen eens een double consulting match tegen Snowie gespeeld. Eveneens uiterst leerrijk en interessant.

En Paulus? Ach, hij begon met een korte rokade (onmiddellijk verloren in Main en Fighters bracket), wist nog wel enkele ronden doorheen de last chance te laveren, maar gleed dan ergens halverwege onderuit. De eigen matchen die hij met de hand noteerde, verloor hij allemaal.

Nieuw

Nieuw in het wereldje van de backgammonmatchnoteerders: een kleine camera aan een gebogen staander boven het midden van het bord. Klein, handig en volgens mij heel praktisch. Dat moet ik ook hebben voor mijn Sinterklaas! (Scène in de Mediamarkt: "Juffrouw, ik ben op zoek naar een kleine camera die ik boven een backgammonbord kan bevestigen." "Pardon?")

En verder

Er is veel meer te beleven dan de gewone toernooien. Vanaf donderdag begint het feest met satellieten en een double consultation. Alle dagen zijn er jackpots voor alle bedragen, een teamtoernooi, een toernooi voor de slachtoffers in Japan, enz. Dit jaar waren er zelfs twee seminars, waaronder eentje van Mochy. Je krijgt er zeker waar voor je geld.

De tegenstanders

De Scandinaviërs zijn bijna zonder uitzondering zeer sportief: ervaren spelers die zich correct gedragen en geen scènes maken. Dit tot in schril contrast met wat je soms in Monte Carlo allemaal meemaakt. De klok wordt dikwijls gebruikt en tegenwoordig spelen ze ook volgens de "legal moves"-regel: een illegale zet moet steeds hersteld worden. Zeker weten doe ik het niet, maar ik geloof dat ook toeschouwers een illegale zet mogen rapporteren.

Conclusie

Net zoals de voorbije jaren kijk ik met plezier terug op dit toernooi. Sportief wil het me niet echt lukken in die grote toernooien (de vier laatste keren werd ik telkens in de tweede ronde eruit geknikkerd, in de consolation overkwamen me de vreselijkste zaken, en de last chance was helemaal een lachertje), maar het is altijd prettig in zo’n sterk gezelschap mee te spelen.

Het is een toernooi dat ik iedereen warm kan aanbevelen. Het is niet echt duur (vliegtuig en hotel vind je in alle prijsklassen) en op elk niveau (Champions, Advanced en Intermediate) is er een interessant toernooi met veel deelnemers en mooie prijzen. Misschien is de equity niet echt goed, omdat die kerels (en vrouwen!) zo goed spelen. Maar zolang je geen professional bent, is dat niet echt belangrijk.

Als je ooit enkele dagen in een zaal met honderden backgammonspelers wilt zitten, dan verschaft de Nordic Open je zonder meer de beste prijs-kwaliteit-verhouding. Wanneer reizen we eens met een hele troep Laaglanders naar Kopenhagen?

Five participants for the fourth round (out of twelve) of our Club Championship 2011. There were 50 championship points to be distributed, 35 for the winner and 15 for the runner-up. In addition, each participants received a 2-point participation bonus.

Toon won all of his matches and got the 35 points. Alain, Johan and Patrick each won 2 out 4 matches; since Alain defeated Johan, Johan defeated Patrick and Patrick defeated Alain, they shared the 15 points for the second place, that is, 5 points each.

We were happy to see Henri again, finalist of the Leuven Open 2010. None of his backgames ('bakspel') worked out, however...

• Ranking Club Championship 2011

Currently, three clubs are participating in the 4 Cubes competition, Belgium's inofficial backgammon interclub championship: Ghent, Leuven, and Hasselt. Ghent is in possession of the 4 Cubes already since January 29, 2010. At stake for the clash between Leuven and Hasselt: the status of Challenger, giving the holder the right (and moral obligation) to challenge the leader Ghent. Leuven is the Challenger but lost the clash of February 18, 2010, with Ghent. Therefore, it now has to defend its Challenger status to Ghent. Home advantage is for Leuven: Hasselt has to win at least 9 out 4 * 4 = 16 matches to conquer the Challenger status. Visitor Hasselt chooses the match length, to 7 points. To manage the timing, the clock is used: Bronstein, 14 minutes per match plus 12 seconds per move.

The 1st round starts dramatically for Leuven, with Hasselt winning all four matches. In the 2nd round, however, Leuven almost manages to close the gap by winning 3 out of 4 matches. The 3rd round is split evenly between the two clubs. At the start of the 4th and final round Leuven is trailing 5-7 and has to win at least 3 out of the 4 remaining matches if it is to remain Challenger.

Zsolt takes a 5-2 lead to Walter, but then disaster strikes and with the cube on 2 he loses an unfortunate backgammon. Marc and Johan win their matches to Laiky and Ronny, respectively. Patrick and Luc then play the final and decisive match of the evening: if Patrick wins it will be 8-8 and Leuven retains the Challenger status, but if Luc wins it will be 7-9 and the new challenger will be Hasselt. The spectators see how at a 4-4 score Patrick loses an extremely close race with the cube on 2. The Crawford game turns into an ace-point game for Patrick with insufficient timing. The double sixes comes way too late and Luc wins.

Congratulations to the strong Gammonators team. Their clash with Ghent promises to be an exciting one!

Brussels Friendly 3 on the 1st of April was a thrilling succes in Orée, a splendid backgammon location with bar, restaurant and animo. 14 players managed to guess organizer Guy's age and played for free the day after his birthday. Toon Van Herreweghe was slightly happy with the draw and lucky with the dice to beat Dominique Stuyck in the 1st round (8th final). Later on, he beat Patrick De Wilde and Olivier Neve to reach his second Brussels Friendly final. There he met... Guy Van Middelem, winner of both previous Brussels Friendly editions, who came from 1-4 behind (on 5) to beat Paulus Van Rooijen (the Netherlands), and from 2-3 behind to end Johan Segers's hopes. Bert Van Kerckhove couldn't manage to stop lucky organizer Guy in the semi-finals either. This victory turned out to be Guy's last one, ending a string of 10 consecutive wins: Toon captured Guy's crown with ease. Well done, Toon!

New player Hans Zenger (Germany) surprised Johan and Paul Van Dijke (the Netherlands) in the final to earn the 1st Consolation prize.

Patrick beat Johan in the final of the Last Chance.

Luc came, Luc played and Luc won. The tone for the 4 Cubes confrontation of Leuven vs. Hasselt of April 8 is set. Congratulations to Hasselt Gammonator Luc Palmans who came a long way to play the tournament. Johan and Luc, respectively the numbers 1 and 2 in the rating list, met in the final of the March tournament of our club championship. For Johan it was the third final in a row, a fine achievement in itself.

The final in the Consolation was won by Toon against Guy, the organizer and winner of the first two Brussels Friendly tournaments. Will Guy succeed in celebrating his birthday by winning Brussels Friendly 3 on Friday 1 April? (Guess his age and you can participate for free!)

Patrick, winner of the January and February tournaments of the club championship won the final of the Last Chance against Dan Pascu, another Gammonator, who participated for the second time already.

This means that Johan is coming closer to Patrick in the ranking and that we have a group of 4 players within 8 points. Excitement for the next tournament is guaranteed! See you soon...

The same night, Toon Van Herreweghen sent a text message that he had succeeded in breaking the 2000 barrier at FIBS, the First Internet Backgammon Server. Congratulations!

As in January, Patrick De Wilde and Johan Segers met in the final. This was Johan's opportunity to take revenge. At double match point (4-4 in a match to 5), Patrick took a strong option on the victory by pinning Johan down to a rather unfavorable ace-point game with questionable timing. But Patrick's bear-off with in total no less than 4 shots was rather unlucky. The last shot was the right one for Johan, whose double 2 not only hit but also miraculously closed the board at the same time. At that moment Patrick had already borne off 10 checkers. As Patrick kept on dancing, Johan's hopes for the victory grew larger, especially after his decision not to clear the five-point but leave a gap on the 3-point instead blocked Patrick's double 5, preventing him to get in from the bar. But then disaster struck: because of the gap, Johan had to leave two shots himself, the second one of which was hit by Patrick's checker. At that point the game became a close race between two checkers having to come round the whole board and join their remaining fellows on the low home-board points. The first to bear off his remaining stones was Patrick, who thereby whon the game, the match, and the tournament.

With his second victory Patrick takes the lead by doubling his points. After 2 consecutive victories in the Brussels Friendly tournaments, Guy Van Middelem took the third place in the consolation by beating Dan Pascu, who showed up after a long period of absence. In the final of the last chance, Alain Chif imposed himself on Ghent player Michel Lamote, who came all the way from Brugge to participate in our tournament - thanks!

I am delighted to organize our third edition next month (March 25) to see who can stop Patrick.

The Backgammon Club Ghent, holding the title of Belgium's Best Backgammon Club already since January 29, 2010, has had to defend its title 3 times already: two times against Leuven (December 28, 2010 and July 6, 2010) and once against Hasselt's Gammonators (April 23, 2010). This time, Leuven was more determined than ever to reverse the situation, even in absence of its captain, Toon Van Herreweghen.

So on Friday, February 18, four Leuven players, Johan Segers, Patrick De Wilde, Guy Van Middelem, and Zsolt Tasnadi, travelled to Ghent to meet the team from Ghent: Michel Lamote,Bert Van Kerckhove, Johan Vervust, and Geert Van der Stricht. Their mission: to win at least 9 out of 16 (= 4 times 4) 5-point matches to be played between the two teams. Use of the clock was in force: Bronstein system, 12 minutes per match plus 12 seconds per move.

The evening started out promisingly for Leuven: 3-1 for Leuven after Round 1. But then the tide turned against the Challenger: all four Round 2 matches went to Ghent, which was now leading 5-3. Ghent went on winning the first two matches of Round 3 as well: 7-3. Leuven's updated mission: to win all of the 6 remaining matches.

Patrick's victory to Geert provided a spark of hope (7-4 for Ghent), and in the Johan-Johan clash, Johan S (Leuven) managed to fight back from a desperate Crawford game to reach double match point. However, the other six players from Ghent and Leuven saw how Johan V (Ghent) won the match and thereby secured his team's victory: 8-4.

Two out of the four remaining matches were still played, both teams sharing the points. Final result: 9-5 to Ghent.

Following a fine tradition, Ghent generously invited the visitors from Leuven on two delicious bottles of Cava.

Congratulations to Ghent, who is now Belgium's Best Backgammon Club for more than a year, after withstanding successfully 4 attacks already.

But let there be no doubt: "We'll be back..."

After a successful start (12 players) of the Leuven Club Championship 2011 the Friday before (report), it was up to Brussels Friendly 2 on the 4th of February.

A splendid backgammon location with bar and restaurant - the 'Toast à la moëlle' and the 'Coq au vin' tasted splendid - at the Royal Orée Tennis Hockey Bridge Club welcomed 10 players eager to defeat organizer and reigning champion Guy Van Middelem (from Brussels Friendly 1 in December 2010 - report).

Nobody could manage the dream: Guy beat Walter Meuwis with a 4-cube win at 1-1 (out of 5) in the first round; Marc Van Haverbeke and Lieve Stroobants had no chance in the 1/4 and 1/2 finals; Alain Chif was waiting for a thrilling final. At 2-away/2-away, a winning double sealed Guy's second victory on his homeground. The challenge will be up at the Friday 1st of April (date to be confirmed) for the Brussels Friendly 3 at the same location.

By the way, we've seen some surprises in the main tournament (playing to 5): Lieve threw some nice dice at the crucial moments against ranking-leader and Master's champion 2009 Johan Segers and newcomer Olivier Neve ousted Hasselt's main player and Master's champion 2010 Luc Palmans. The narrow road to victory was opened.

In the consolation (playing to 3), Walter beat Olivier to hold Hasselt's honours intact.

In the last chance (playing to 1), Lieve beat Luc to earn the 5th prize.

A special mention for Joëlle Ihmsen (and her friend Marie-Claire) who came all the way from Luxemburg to join the fun.

First of all, warm congratulations to Patrick. After he won the 2nd Leuven Open he could also put his name on the first tournament of the Backgammon Club Leuven Championship 2011 by beating Johan in the final. In the final of the consolation Alain won against Toon. The final of the Last chance was won by Marc.

We were 12 players out of which 3 newcomers: Mario, Jurga and Uli. Some of them only learned about the cube just a few minutes before the start. I hope that they enjoyed themselves a lot and we hope to see them again very soon.

The tournament finished well after one o'clock. So our next challenge is to finish in the future around midnight.

Patrick, you won but do not forget it is still a long way to go!
