The Backgammon Club Leuven celebrated its 5th anniversary by a well-visited tournament on Saturday 14 November 2009. Belgium's rating champion Toon Van Herreweghen won the first prize in the Advanced level, crushing some strong players from the Netherlands on his path to victory. A fantastic result, proving once more that backgammon is in the first place a game of skill, in which hard work and study lead to success. Congratulations!

No better way to celebrate your birthday than by a backgammon party, isn't it. The club's 5th and my own 35th anniversary were the perfect excuses for finally realising an old dream: to organise the first Leuven Backgammon Open.
Some choices had to be made. Splitting the tournament into two levels served to attract players from all levels: Intermediate (10,- € entry fee), 21 participants; Advanced (150,- € entry fee), 16 participants.
Copying the format of the Ghent Open and the Benelux Backgammon Masters in Antwerp, I opted for the Swiss tournament system, in which everybody gets to play all rounds, for a maximum of fun. A one-day tournament seemed sufficiently ambitious for this first edition. Ghent Open organiser Bert Van Kerckhove had shown that it is possible to squeeze 7 rounds of 7-point matches into a single day, provided you start early enough (Round 1 at 11:00) and enforce the use of the clock at a slightly higher speed than usual (Bronstein, 12 minutes per match plus 12 seconds per move). In the Intermediate level, limiting the match length to 5 points proved good enough. The date, Saturday 14 November, resulted from superposing the backgammon tournament calenders in Belgium and the Netherlands and the poker tournament calender in the University Pool & Snooker, the scene for the tournament.
Eventually 37 players showed up on Saturday morning, and many more called or wrote with honest sounding regrets and good excuses (strike at the airport, bridge weekend in Paris, first baby expected any moment...). A bye in the Advanced level was avoided by Fakhri Salasi, who kindly agreed to promote from the Intermediate to the Advanced level, thereby joining her husband Akhbar Soltani (from whom she lost).
In the Advanced level the fight was going to be tough with some strong players like Rogier van Gemert (manifold Dutch champion, Masters, Amstergammon,...), Paulus van Rooijen (Dutch Open, Rotterdam Open,...), Dan Pascu (Superzondag Rotterdam), Michel Lamote (Runner-up Masters, winner Second category Bristol Open 2006,...), and Luc Palmans (Antwerp Open), as well as some local talent like and Patrick Dewilde (runner-up Ghent Open 2009 and entering the tournament via a quarter entry) and Toon Van Herreweghen (1900+ rating on FIBS). As for myself (just kidding), I decided not to mix up the roles of organiser and player.
Surprisingly maybe for the outsiders but not for the Leuven club members was the convincing victory of Toon Van Herreweghen (6/7), his first title. He has been working hard for many years with GNU Backgammon, is yet to be defeated after 12 victories in the challenge of the 4 Cubes (currently back in possession of the Backgammon Club Leuven), and is leading the Belgium rating list by a scandalously large margin. The second and third prizes (5/7) were shared by Walter Meuwis and Rogier van Gemert, who successfully recovered from a bad start.
The large number (21) of players in the Intermediate level, among who many new faces, is excellent news for the future of backgammon in Leuven and in Belgium. The result was a foto-finish with three players having 6/7. The Swiss tie-breaker algorithm crowned Annick Hasdenteufel the winner, followed by Adi State and Marc Van Haverbeke, who's progress in just a few months is absolutely remarkable. Noteworthy also is the 4th place (5/7) of Kris Boyen, who started reading about match cube strategy just a week before the tournament, an apparently worthwhile investment.
A big thanks to Backgammon Club Leuven co-founders Gerhard Koops and Christof Nuyttens for the logistic support, to Paulus van Rooijen for the electronic chess clocks and for the guidance through the more esoteric parts of the Swiss pairing system, to Patrick Dewilde for the clarifications of the subtle differences between the American and British tournament rules and procedures, to Christina and Liévin for the wonderful venue and the high-quality super-fast catering in the University Pool & Snooker, to my wife Nadia Falise for her loving support and careful cash management, and finally to all participants for their presence, happy faces, and kind words of appreciation, making this first edition a success and giving me a truly wonderful one-week early birthday party.
The preparations for the second edition in 2010 have already been started. You may look forward to some great surprises. See you next year!
