Three Players in Contention for the 2016 Championship Title With One Round To Go

Because of a Late Night Shopping event in the Leuven city centre, parking space was extremely scarse. After searching for half an hour, Eric, Sonja and Christof could not find a place to park their cars and had to return home. Those who did find a spot reported very long searching times too. Thank you to all players who made the effort to join the tournament, whether successful or not.

Welcome to new player Guido. He’s been playing backgammon for a long time, with a friend who passed away one year ago. We hope he enjoyed the evening and the company.

In the 2016 Championship, three players are still in contention for the title: Kristoffer (66 points), Alain (58 points), and Nader (52 points). The race will come to a finish at the 12th and final round, on Friday, December 23, in Café Sport, at 19:45. See you there!

8th Leuven Backgammon Open — Almost there!

To the participants of the 8th Leuven Backgammon Open

Sunday, November 20, 2016
Brasserie De Abdijmolen, Abdij Van Park 4, 3001 Heverlee
9:00 – 19:00

So far, 30 people have registered for the Leuven Open. Thank you for being one of them!

  • You’re welcome from 9:00 to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea and some delicious viennoiseries.
  • The weather forecast for Sunday is stormy. Please drive carefully. There is free parking at the venue.
  • The tournament format is 6 rounds of 5-point matches. We play with the doubling cube and the Crawford rule.
  • Matches are timed with electronic clocks. If you’re not used to playing with a clock, no problem: just come a little earlier to practice. You’ll get the knack of it in no time.
  • Please be in time for the pairings at 9:45. If you’re not physically present at 9:45, you cannot play the first round.
  • At 9:50, there will be a short explanation on the EUBGF rules in force at the tournament.
  • The first round starts at 10:00.
  • Thanks in advance for bringing your board(s) and/or clock(s) if you have indicated at registration you would do so.

Looking forward to a great day!

4 Cubes 2016: Final Battle on Friday, November 18, at Café Sport

The fifth and final round of BGFed.be’s 4 Cubes 2016 interclub competition will take place on Friday, November 18, at 20:00, at Café Sport, Leuven. Both Leuven teams will play at home:

  • Leuven 1 vs Brussels
  • Leuven 2 vs Brugge

Regardless of the result of that evening, Leuven 2 is already sure of winning the title and the prerogative of guarding the precious 4 Cubes in 2017. Still, since Brugge holds the 2015 title, a lot of honour is at stake! Looking forward to a great backgammon evening.

One Checker Lost and Found at October’s 4th Friday

A hilarious moment occurred when two players, whose names shall not be disclosed, noticed, during the bear-in, that one of them had been playing with 14 checkers only… The EUBGF rules state that an illegal starting position stands as it is as soon as the starting player has made his or her second roll. Moreover, a player starting with less than 15 checkers can still lose a gammon.

With two more tournaments to go in 2016 and at most 32 Championship Points to be earned, five players are still in contention to win the 2016 club title: Kristoffer (62 CP), Alain (50 CP), Nader (48 CP), Johan S. (46 CP) and Henri (42 CP). For the full results, please see the link to the spreadsheet in the menu.

The final two 4th Fridays of 2016 will take place on Friday, November 25 and December 23, at 19:45 in the Café Sport, Leuven.

Eric Aries (left) and Ronny Conaert (right), both from the city of Geel, finalists of the September 4th Friday tournament. Congratulations to winner Ronny!

After three rounds, Eric and Ronny, both living in the city of Geel, had three victories each. Their match in the fourth round would therefore decide upon the evening’s winner. Ronny came out first — congratulations!

Welcome also to new player Christian. We hope that “whatever was left of him” had a good time.

After the club’s summer excursion to the Brigde Club Pieterman, the tournament took place again in the Café Sport, which had been renovated during the summer. We immediately felt at home in the spacious and well-lit meeting room. The spaghetti bolognaise was delicious!

In the Club Championship 2016 ranking, Kristoffer firmly remains on top. But there are still three tournaments to go, and a single tournament victory can make a big difference!
